Broadway paid tribute Thursday night to actress Natasha Richardson, who died Wednesday after sustaining head injuries in a skiing accident. The late actress’s husband Liam Neeson, her mother Vanessa Redgrave and sister Joely Richardson attended the dimming of lights on Broadway in honor of Richardson. The family was comforted by actress Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick as well as actor Ron Rifkin. Richardson, 45, died from internal bleeding caused by a blunt impact to the head. She fell Monday during a ski lesson in Canada and was able to walk back to her room. About an hour later, Richardson complained of a headache and was taken to a nearby hospital. On Tuesday, Richardson was flown to Lenox Hills Hospital in NYC, where she died after being taken off life support. The actress’s family has requested that donations be made in her name to the amfAR foundation for AIDS research, a charity that Richardson supported after her father Tony Richardson died of the disease. The first Dancing with the Stars results show of season 8 put the two couples with the least amount of votes in a dance-off. Belinda Carlisle and Steve Wozniak found themselves in the bottom two. They each performed one of their previous routines and were then judges. Their score was combined with their two previous scores and viewer’s votes to determine who would be going home. Carlisle performed her salsa and was praised for better hip action but judges thought she lacked in other areas of the dance. Wozniak’s quick step was improved and judges thought he did well compared to his first two performances. After the scores were tallied, the results were in and it was Carlisle who was eliminated. “I had a great time. I wish I could have done better for Jonathan, because he’s a great teacher,” she said. For those of you who don’t know, I began part time teaching this year as a low risk way to see (a) if I’d like it, and (b) if I’d be good at it. After all, I did some tutoring as work study while in undergrad and enjoyed that (well at least the money was easy), so I figured having a class to myself would be fun. I found a contact at a local community college, submitted an application, a copy of my masters degree, and some other random items (should’ve been an indication of what was to come), and got a call from the program director a few days later. We talked briefly and I mentioned that I would have to get “approval” from area leadership before I began work. Class was to start Jan 11, and as of Jan 3rd, I still hadn’t received a yay or neigh from the area. I bit the bullet and called the program director to tell her that approval had not come and that she should probably cancel the section I was to teach.
