Green Taxation?

Our government is saving us from the threat of "hazardous" disposable items - with taxes!
Recently a law in France was passed to tax plastic tableware to try to encourage consumers to buy more eco-friendly products, and Paris is planning to expand the measure to include several other items, the environment minister announced last Monday.
There are similar taxes on disposable items in Malta and closer to home in Ireland; the plastic carrier bag tax of 15 Eurocents per bag was introduced in 2002. In Europe we are starting to see supermarkets charge for plastic bags, or only offer "bags for life" at cash points or their Anya Hindmarch equivalents. Sainsburys have announced today that they will not give carrier bags away at the tills and customers must request them.
There is apparently a law in some parts of Europe that states that companies serving food are required to lay a new table cloth (or serve food on a wipe clean table) after each meal. Restaurants in Spain use large amounts of disposable paper

Polycarbonate Pint glasses

Unbreakable Plastic Pint Glasses and rigid Polystrene Reusable Glasses are now a common feature in pubs and nightclubs up and down the UK, particularly so since the smoking ban. As people who smoke are forced outside to feed their habit - taking their Pint Glasses with them - so we have seen a rise in the number of "glassings" (sadly the word "Glass" is now a verb in this country "to glass")
As a consequence of this upsurge in injuries more councils, pubs chains and police forces are demanding that unbreakable Polycarbonate Glasses are used on an evening (it seems the availability of 24 hr drinking here hasn't changed our drinking habits too much)
Funding for such fundamental changes to our Drinking Cups has been granted by some local authorities to assist some establishments in the change over, monies one imagines has been saved from a reduction in ambulance call outs and time spent in A&E.
There are two types of Plastic Cups which are now becoming commonplace, Polycarbonate glasses and Polystyrene

The Champagne Flute Debate

Often people query the description of One Piece Injection Moulded Plastic Champagne Glasses, the query being what does One Piece refer? This simply means that the product is in-one-piece, not in two or three parts. There are many Champagne Flutes for sale which come with the bases not attached, these are to be attached prior to use.
While these Plastic Glasses may be cheaper to move around (you can fit more in a box) and as a result a little cheaper to buy, if you are drinking a £50 bottle of Bollinger saving a few pennies on your Disposable Glass can prove a fruitless exercise as explained below.
Two piece flutes sometimes wobble as many of the bases do not fit correctly, are a pain to assemble and many bases will fall off leaving you unable to put your drink down!
One Piece Champagne Flutes never have this problem and are much closer in appearance to real glass flutes.
Many would argue against drinking Champagne from anything other than a glass flute but the plastic champagne glass has its

Ceramic Cups vs Paper Cups

Many coffee chains in the UK and US are now offering price breaks if customers bring ceramic coffee tumblers instead of using the stores own paper cups.
Most are lauded for their commitment to "going green" but is there any proof that these changes will have the desired effect and minimise our negative effect on the earth?
Research from the early 1990s suggests that each time you clean a ceramic cup in the dishwasher, it takes about as much energy - and would probably produce as many emissions - as it takes simply to produce a new disposable cup!
Gains in dishwasher efficiency since then may have changed the math a little, but if you wash your ceramic cup after every use, you could easily be talking hundreds of cups of coffee before your cup makes more sense than a daily dose of paper. Cleaning the mug by hand may not absolve you, either - although you can help your case by using cold water and be sparse with the washing up liquid - detergents are pretty energy-intensive to make.
The argument is

BUS passengers in Levenshulme are the first in the country to be able to pay to travel at new parking meter-style machines.
The solar-powered devices are being installed along the busy A6 corridor from Piccadilly railway station, through Levenshulme and on to Stockport.
They are being tested as part of an £82,000, year-long trial.
Tickets from the machines enable passengers to travel throughout Greater Manchester. Transport chiefs hope the machines will make it quicker and easier for passengers to get their tickets before boarding buses.

CheckTapCheckTap will stop you from wasting electricity on your PC and peripherals. It could save you up to 50% on your electricity bill and help the environment.
Problem - Unneeded ElectricityRight now I have my PC and a monitor plugged into the mains. I’ve also got a printer, some speakers, scanner and fax machine all using up electricity, even though I’m not using them and have some of them on standby.
If I get up from my desk and go to lunch or the phone goes I won’t be using ANY of these devices but I’m still drawing electricity to them.

In Octoberof 2008, a team of eight European high-altitude mountaineers attempted a climb of Mt. Satopanth, in the Himalayas of northern India. Here is an update on the effectiveness of MelanSol during their climb. Hansruedi Wirth, adaily MelanSol user, is responsible for its being chosen to protect the group’sskin for the second time, during a climb of this magnitude.
Ihad a telephone conversation with Hansruedi over the weekend. The team went up to an altitude of 6,300 meters or 20,669 feet of the Satopanth. They could not go further due too much snow.
Regarding the MelanSol Hansruedirepeated what he told us two years ago, during his climb of Annapurna IV,in the Himalayas of Nepal:
- All the participants love the smell of the lotion
- Those members with light skin report: At an altitude of 6000 meters, their skin turned into a light shade of red that was gone the next morning.
- Hansruedi skin accepted the lotion well: No red skin at all during this climb.
- The biological composition of MelanSol,

Altering the look of your cabinets can be done in several ways. Cabinet refacing is putting new faces to old cabinets. Your kitchen cabinets look brand new without the hassle of structural work. Adding tile to cabinets is a rare process. Most people add tile to the countertops. But actually tiling the cabinet can add a beautiful decor to any cabinet face. In just a few simple steps you will be on your way to becoming a kitchen cabinet, decorating,
