Michael Steele, the former Lt. Gov. of Maryland, has become the first African American to lead the Republican Party after members of the Republican National Committee elected him party chief following six rounds of voting. Steele emerged victorious after receiving 91 votes from the 168-member Republican National Committee on Friday. After five rounds Steele had collected 79 votes, six short of the simple majority needed and after Saul Anuzis dropped out he picked up an additional 12 votes in the sixth round. The 50-year-old had served as Lt. Gov. under Governor Robert Ehrlich from 2003 through 2007, becoming the first African American to serve in a state-wide office in Maryland. Alaska’s Mount Redoubt Volcano “Heading Toward an Eruption”

Geophysicist Peter Cervelli with the Alaska Volcano Observatory says “every indication” shows Mount Redoubt is set to erupt. Cervelli tells CNN it is unclear when the eruption will occur. “I would not be surprised to see it erupt anytime. We’re going to know it when we see it,” he says. The observatory released a statement Friday saying Redoubt has been “more energetic than that of the previous several days. However, it is still less vigorous than that observed last week.” The 10,197 foot peak is located around 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, Alaska’s most populated city. Mount Redoubt last erupted in December 1989 and lasted 4 months.
