Oil Crew Kidnapped Off Coast of Cameroon, Gunmen Threaten to Kill Hostages

A group calling themselves the Bakassi Freedom Fighters overtook an oil vessel off the coast of Cameroon and have threatened to kill the ten hostages if the Cameroonian government refuses to speak with them. The group was against the recent decision made by Nigeria to turn over the oil-rich territory of the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon and has threatened continued violence in the region unless the Cameroonian government met with them. According to reports the group sent three speedboats out to the oil vessel and boarded the ship around midnight. Ten people were taken hostage made up of seven French nationals, two Cameroonians and a Tunisian. The group has now threatened that if the Cameroonian government doesn’t begin talks within seven days they will kill a hostage every three days. Libya Pays Out Compensation to Relatives of U.S. Victims in Lockerbie Bombing and Berlin Attack

Libya has paid $1.5 billion into a compensation fund designed to settle lawsuits filed by relatives of U.S. victims of terrorist attacks attributed to the North African country. The fund will pay out money to families of victims in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people, the 1986 Berlin disco bombing that killed three and injured more than 200 and the 1989 bombing of a French airline over Chad. The payment was part of a deal struck with the U.S. back in August which outlined plans for the U.S. to pay $300 million to relatives of victims in an airstrike that followed the Berlin bombing. As part of the deal Libya agreed to compensate the victims but did not have to accept responsibility for the attacks. Former South African President Thabo Mbeki Denies Reports He Will Campaign for ANC

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has denied reports that he would campaign for the ruling African National Congress during next year’s elections. Mbeki was essentially forced to resign by the ANC following allegations that he interfered with a case involving Jacob Zuma. Zuma had defeated Mbeki for the party’s leadership position late last year and is widely expected to take the presidential post in the 2009 elections. Earlier this year Zuma was facing charges of corruption but a judge suggested that Mbeki may have interfered with the trial. Mbeki strongly denied the allegations yet he felt the pressure of the ANC to step down. Despite ousting Mbeki as president the ANC still believed he would be campaigning for the party, something Mbeki has no plans to do. Migrant Boat Off Miami Beach Crashes, 3 Confirmed Dead

At least three people have been confirmed dead and several more remain missing after a migrant boat sailing with a Dominican Republic flag ran aground off Miami Beach early Friday morning. The waters around the area have been searched for those missing, a number that has been placed between 16-20. That number could be greater as authorities have had a difficult time getting an accurate number from those on board. Officials have placed at last 14 people in custody while several more were taken to hospitals for evaluation. Barack Obama Boots Journalists from Plane for Final Leg of Campaign

The Barack Obama campaign has booted journalists from three major newspapers from the Democratic presidential nominee’s plane for the final leg of the campaign. Journalists from the Washington Times, New York Post and Dallas Morning News were told there was no more room for them on Obama’s campaign plane and they would not be accompanying the nominee over the last few days leading up to the election. The Washington Times had been covering the Obama campaign since its inception and have expressed outrage at the decision. All three papers had earlier endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain. William Walsh Confesses to Killing Wife, NY Teacher Leah Walsh

Authorities said Friday that William Walsh has confessed to murdering his wife, New York teacher Leah Walsh. Police say that William says he strangled his wife during a violent fight over his alleged infidelity and then dumped her body as he staged her death to look like she was the victim of a random roadside attack. Detectives believe that William killed Leah, 29, Sunday after returning from a trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey. After strangling Leah, he washed his clothes at a coin laundry, ate at McDonalds and did “some various other things that he thought could substantiate his alibi.” William then loaded his wife’s body into her car and drove her to the Long Island Expressway, where he let the air out of her front tire to make it appear as if the car broke down. He dumped Leah’s body in an embankment 50 feet from the expressway and walked home. William returned a short time later and threw Leah’s purse in a nearby ditch. Skeletal Remains of Steve Fossett Found Near Wreckage

Searchers have found skeletal remains believed to be those of Steve Fossett. The remains were found with a pair of tennis shoes, credit cards and Fossett’s Illinois driver’s license. “Pending DNA results, I believe our coroner’s investigation is over and the Fossett family will finally have closure,” said Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said. Fossett’s plane wreckage was found earlier this month after hiker Preston Morrow found pilots licenses bearing the adventures name and cash in the High Sierras. The 63-year-old disappeared in September 2007 after taking off from a Nevada Ranch in a single-engine plane. He was declared legally dead in February after no clues to his whereabouts were discovered. A source has confirmed that the gun used to kill three of actress Jennifer Hudson’s family members has been found. A .45 caliber handgun was found in an alley nearly a block from where Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew JulianKing was found shot to death in an abandoned SUV. Sources say unfired bullets in the handgun matches shell casings found near the bodies of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson; and brother, Jason Hudson; who were shot to death in their Chicago home. Police have not confirmed reports that the gun they found is the Hudson murder weapon. The estranged husband of Julia Hudson, King’s mother and Jennifer’s sister, is being questioned in the case. Despite being spotted out kissing Gerard Butler, Shanna Moakler has hinted that she and ex-husband Travis Barker have rekindled their romance. The 25-year-old says that he is “still a goober from the Midwest” but admits that there are many perks that come with winning, including buying nice cars and treating his family. “I think in one sense everything’s changed but in another sense nothing has. Mackenzie Phillips Pleads Guilty to Felony Cocaine Possession

Actress Mackenzie Phillips pleaded guilty to one count of felony cocaine possession on Friday. The 48-year-old thanked the court for “probably saving my life” and agreed to enter an 18-month drug deferment program. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank [law enforcement] for stopping me, and probably saving my life,” Phillips said. The ‘One Day at a Time’ star was arrested August 27 at the Los Angeles International Airport after security found her carrying “what appeared to be heroin and cocaine in baggies and balloons.” Phillips has a history of drug addiction.
