Charles Barkley, former NBA Star, Arrested for DWI

Charles Barkley, a former NBA and Olympic star, was arrested Wednesday. Barkley ran a stop sign in Scottsdale, Arizona around 1 a.m. and was pulled over. He was taken to a nearby mobile command post where he refused to take a breath test but submitted to a blood test. He was charged with driving while impaired. “He was very nice and professional,” said police Lt. Eric Shuhandler. The results from the blood test are expected within a week. If convicted, Barkley could face between 1 and 10 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and his driver’s license suspended for 90 days. Barkley, 45, played in the NBA for several years before representing the United States in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. In October 2008, he announced that he would run for governor of Alabama in 2014. Case Keenum was 22/33 passing for 252 yards and a touchdown and scored on a pair of runs and Bryce Beall collected 135 yards rushing and a TD while adding another 95 yards receiving to lead the Houston Cougars (8-5) past the Air Force Falcons (8-5) 34-28 in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on Wednesday. The bowl win was the first for Houston since 1980. Houston had things going their way early as they recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and four plays later Beall was in the endzone following a one-yard run to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. That lead was short lived though as the Falcons answered with a six-play 77-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard TD run from Jared Tew to even the score. Despite the Air Force touchdown the Houston didn’t appear discouraged as they mounted their own drive and Keenum eventually punched it in from a yard out to move in front 14-7. For the second time in three years Chad Pennington has been named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year, the first player to ever receive the award twice. Pennington led his Miami Dolphins to a remarkable 11-5 regular season mark and the AFC East title one year after the club went 1-15. Along with the division title Pennington put the Dolphins in the playoffs and they will now host the Baltimore Ravens in the first round on Sunday. While Pennington’s first Comeback Player of the Year award in 2006 came a year after he returned from two rotator cuff operations and put his New York Jets team in the playoffs. Pennington then had a rough 2007 campaign in which he was benched and appeared in just nine games while throwing 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Jets then dropped Pennington in favor of Brett Favre and he ended up in Miami. Former NBA superstar Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of DUI early Wednesday morning after being stopped by Arizona police for running a stop sign. Barkley was leaving an area in Scottsdale when he was pulled over. The 45-year-old refused to give a breath test but was given a blood test instead before being taken into custody. He was released after being processed and cited for the incident. Barkley currently works as a commentator for NBA basketball games. A Bangkok nightclub packed with revelers celebrating the New Year became a deadly inferno in the early hours as a fire ripped through the club killing at least 53 people and leaving more than 100 injured. Gunman Wounds Two Israelis in Denmark Mall

A shooting at a Denmark mall on Wednesday has left two Israelis wounded in what police are calling a targeted attack. The two Israelis were working at a hairdressing shop at the Rosengaard mall in Odense when a man reportedly walked in, shouted at the two and then shot one in the arm and the other in the leg. According to news agencies in Denmark the two Israelis had been harassed by a group of youths over the past several days but it is unknown if the attacker had been part of that group. Russian Energy Giant Claims Ukraine Threatening to Seize Gas

The row between Russia’s Gazprom and Ukraine has apparently escalated as the energy giant has now accused the country of threatening to seize gas that is being transported through pipelines to the rest of Europe. Gazprom has said it would no longer supply Ukraine with gas if the country didn’t sign a new contract by January 1. Gazprom supplies nearly a quarter of the European Union’s gas needs and their conflict with Ukraine has left many European countries worried that their gas supply could be affected. According to Gazprom, after they told Ukraine that they would cut their gas supplies if the new contract wasn’t signed the country said they would seize gas being carried through the pipelines. Ukraine a major route for transporting gas and an interruption in the service would hit the rest of Europe particularly hard. Israel Rejects International Call for Truce in Gaza, PM Declares Conditions Not Right

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said his country would continue its strikes in the Gaza Strip, rejecting an international call for a brief truce to allow humanitarian aid into the war-torn area. Olmert continued to assert that Israel’s strikes would continue as long as Hamas launched rockets and mortars into southern Israel. While Olmert refused to halt the Israeli attacks he didn’t rule out the possibility if the security of his country’s southern region was intact. Over the past five days Israel has used airstrikes from jets and helicopters to destroy Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, hitting military institutions, schools, government buildings, tunnels and more. Palestinian officials have said the death toll is now nearing 400 with many civilians among the casualties. Many in the international community have condemned Israel’s airstrikes and demanded a ceasefire yet Israeli officials have ignored those calls and have massed ground troops along the border in preparation for further attacks.

China and Vietnam Reach Border Agreement

With just hours before a midnight deadline was to hit China and Vietnam have reached an agreement on a land border dispute along a frontier stretch. The 840 mile stretch of land was the scene of a brief but brutal war in 1979 after Vietnam overthrew Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge. Both sides expressed satisfaction and hope after signing the deal as Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Dawei noted, “The completion of the land border demarcation between China and Vietnam will promote the development of the China-Vietnam strategic partnership. TLC personality Doug Wilson, who is best known as a designer on Trading Spaces and the host of Moving Up, was arrested New Year’s Eve for driving under the influence. Wilson was pulled over in the early morning hours on December 31 after failing to yield to an emergency vehicle. He was taken into custody and spent several hours in jail before being released on $1,000 bond. Wilson was charged with aggravated DUI, driving on a suspended license, illegal transportation of alcohol and failing to yield to the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. Actor Matt Dillon was arrested Tuesday night around 10 p.m. after Vermont state troopers clocked him driving 106 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 91. Dillon, who was driving a rented 2009 Chevy Impala, was taken to a police station in Bradford. He was photographed, finger printed and given a citation. The 44-year-old is due to appear in court on January 21. A rep for Dillon has not commented on the arrest.
