Chrysler to Enter Bankruptcy Protection after Creditors Balk at Deal

Posted on 4/30/2009 @ 8:54 PM in #Business by Brendan1234567 0 comments

Chrysler is set to enter bankruptcy protection after the automaker failed to have its debts written off by its lenders prior to a midnight deadline. That failure to reach a deal was due in large part to Chrysler’s inability to restructure its business, a requirement made by the U.S. government prior to another loan of $6 billion. Chrysler had wanted to pay $2 billion in cash to its lenders and in exchange have its $6.9 billion in secured debt written off. Chrysler had also been asked to reach a new deal with its main union that would have cut costs as well as establish an alliance with the Italian auto firm Fiat. Those two requirements had been moving forward as the automaker had reached an agreement with the union and had been moving forward with Fiat. While Chrysler’s banks agreed to the deal it was frowned upon by hedge funds that still hold a large portion of that debt. The move into Chapter 11 bankruptcy will allow Chrysler time to restructure under the eye of the court while still being

Kenneth “Ken” Lewis has been replaced by Dr. Walter E. Massey as Chairman of the Board at Bank of America on Wednesday. Lewis will remain the company’s president and CEO. After months of criticism, Massey, who has served as director for Bank of America since 1998, was voted as the new Chairman of the Board on Wednesday. The vote took place at BofA’s annual shareholders meeting, which attracted about 2,000 people, three-times the amount of last year’s meeting. All 18 directors were voted in by what BofA characterized as "comfortable margins." Seven other proposals were rejected. Shareholders were at arms with Lewis after Bank of America, the nation’s largest bank, made risky purchases of Countrywide Financial Corp. and Merrill Lynch. Since becoming chief executive in 2001, Lewis has spent well over $100 billion on big acquisitions including Merrill, FleetBoston Financial Corp, credit card issuer MBNA Corp, and, last July, mortgage lender Countrywide Financial. Prior to this position, Massey

Jewel has some Dancing with the Stars advice for injured Melissa Rycroft – compete hurt or quit. The country singer, who was forced to back out of competing this season after injuring her knee during practice, says the Bachelor star shouldn’t stay in the competition if she can’t perform. Jewel also says she doesn’t agree with judges being able to critique the stars’ rehearsal if they are unable to perform live. “I think the rule about ‘judging a rehearsal if the person is too injured to perform’ was weird both times they have used it,” she write on husband Ty Murray’s blog. Rycroft was unable to perform this week due to a rib injury. She was judged on her taped rehearsal. “As bad as I felt for Melissa, who I hope feels better and comes back, I’m used to our cowboy athletes that live by the rule: ‘ride hurt or don’t get a score.’ It may seem harsh, but it seems like the only way to keep things honest,” Jewel adds. “But, if I were to be on the show I might change my mind. Hahah!” Melissa was saved from
