Millvina Dean, Last Titanic Survivor, Dies at 97

Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the sinking of RMS Titanic, has died. Dean died in her sleep Sunday, says her friend Gunter Babler. She was 97. Dean was only 2-months-old when the Titanic sank in 1912. She died at a nursing him in southern England. Dean’s longtime partner Bruno Nordmanis said nursing him staff had discovered Dean’s body Sunday morning. She was hospitalized last week with pneumonia but had recovered and returned to the nursing home. Dean made headlines earlier this year when she began auctioning off Titanic mementos to pay her medical bills. Earlier this month, actors Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio, from the 1997 hit ‘Titanic,’ announced they had set up a fund to help Dean. Susan Boyle Finishes Second in Britain’s Got Talent Competition, Street Dancing Crew Diversity Takes Top Spot

Susan Boyle, the 48-year-old Scottish woman who rocketed to fame following her rendition of the Les Miserable classic I Dreamed a Dream during an audition for Britain’s Got Talent, finished second in the competition on Saturday night. Boyle was upset by a ten-member dance crew Diversity which took the top honors and will now perform before at the Royal Variety Show in December. Boyle had been the odds-on favorite to win the competition after she left the crowd open-mouthed following her audition. The unassuming church volunteer left many chuckling when she indicated she wanted to be a professional singer yet when she hit her first note the crowd roared with approval and she quickly became an Internet sensation. Clips of the performance flooded YouTube and Boyle became a superstar, suddenly thrust into the spotlight and becoming more than just a singer but almost a cause. Petting Zoo Fire in Chicago Kills Dozens of Animals

A fire that ripped through a Chicago petting zoo on Friday killed between 30 and 40 animals, just one month after the nature center was opened to the public for the season. The cause of the blaze at Riegel Farm has not been determined but the director, Robert Graham, has said the 30 to 40 animals that died was a result of smoke inhalation. Riegel Farm, located in the suburb of University Park, has been a popular destination for families and school field trips since the 1960s. Two horses, a bull, a cow and several rabbits, chickens and goats were among the animals killed in the fire. Maria Sharapova continued her amazing run through the 2009 French Open on Sunday as the Russian shook off a terrible second set to knock off Na Li 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 on the clay courts of Roland Garros to advance to the quarterfinals and keep her hopes of a career Grand Slam alive. Sharapova was able to overcome several mistakes including eight double-faults and 33 unforced errors to knock off Na. The Russian capitalized on her break-point opportunities as she collected five breaks on six chances to inch closer to her first French Open singles title. Sharapova has won three Grand Slam singles titles in her career with her first coming at Wimbledon in 2004. Her next title came at the U.S. Open in 2006 and in 2008 she won the Australian Open, leaving only the French Open as the only Grand Slam event she hasn’t won. French Open 2009 Round 4 Results: Ana Ivanovic Falls to Victoria Azarenka in Straight Sets at Roland Garros

Ana Ivanovic will not repeat at the French Open after the Serb was pounded by Belarus’s Victoria Azarenka in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Azarenka dominated Ivanovic with an efficient serve that placed 81 percent of her first offering sin play and resulted in winning points 68 percent of the time. Azarenka committed just seven unforced errors compared to 20 for Ivanovic who never got going on the day. Azarenka has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and her run at the 2009 French Open has been her deepest at any Grand Slam event. She reached the fourth round at the Australian Open earlier this year before falling to Serena Williams in a match she had to retire from while leading. Azarenka also appeared in the fourth round at the 2007 U.S. Open where she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova. Dinara Safina remained on track for her first career Grand Slam singles title on Sunday as the Russian breezed past Aravane Rezai in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals at the French Open. Safina needed just 53 minutes to dispatch Rezai who was clearly overmatched. The number-one seed won 77 percent of her first serves put in play and collected 12 winners compared to just four for Rezai. The Frenchwoman had a terrible time with her serve, winning just 36 percent of her first serves put in play and committing four double-faults. Safina reached the finals of the French Open last year but fell to Ana Ivanovic. In 2009 she reached the finals at the Australian Open but again fell, this time to Serena Williams. Despite never winning a Grand Slam singles title Safina reached number one in the rankings on April 27, 2009. Rafael Nadal will not win his fifth straight French Open title following a stunning four-set loss to Robin Soderling in the fourth round at Roland Garros. Soderling scored an amazing 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) upset on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals and send the Spaniard home, Nadal’s first ever loss at the French Open. Soderling relied on a powerful serve that resulted in nine aces and didn’t have a single double-fault. The Swede needed that powerful serve as he committed a remarkable 59 unforced errors compared to 28 from Nadal. Along with his own offense Soderling did an amazing job handling Nadal’s serve as he broke him on five of six opportunities to collect the biggest win of his career. NBA Eastern Conference Finals Scores: Orlando Magic on to NBA Finals with Win Over Cleveland Cavaliers

Dwight Howard scored 40 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, Rashard Lewis added 18 points and 8 boards and Mickael Pietrus finished with 14 points including four three-pointers as the Orlando Magic used a big second quarter and then cruised past the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-90 on Saturday night to win their best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals 4-2 and advance to the NBA Finals. Orlando never trailed in the game as they came out in the opening frame and hit open shots to take a 19-12 lead with 5:15 left in the quarter. Cleveland was able to trim their deficit to one following three-pointers from Daniel Gibson and LeBron James but the Magic built some breathing room following a Howard dunk and a Pietrus triple and at the end of the quarter they were up 30-25. Roger Federer moved closer to a career Grand Slam on Saturday as he managed to get past Paul-Henri Mathieu at the French Open with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 victory on the clay courts of Roland Garros to advance to the fourth round. Federer hammered out 14 aces in the match while collecting 59 winners in the three hour match. The Swiss star controlled the day with an effective first serve that resulted in points 82 percent of the time and he managed to break Mathieu’s serve on five of 16 opportunities. Federer is sitting on 13 career Grand Slam singles titles, just one behind the record held by Pete Sampras. A win at Roland Garros would also mark a career Grand Slam for Federer as he has won Wimbledon five times, the U.S. Open five times and the Australian Open three times. Jelena Jankovic continued to cruise at the 2009 French Open on Saturday as she breezed past Jarmila Groth in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to move into the fourth round at Roland Garros and inch closer to capturing her first career Grand Slam singles title. Jankovic needed just 1:06 to dispatch the Aussie as she had complete control of her serve, placing 72 percent of her first serves in play and winning 68 percent of those. In comparison Groth struggled with her serve, winning just 37 percent of her first serves and committed 32 unforced errors. Serena Williams had a scare at Roland Garros but remained on track for her 11th career Grand Slam singles title after dropping Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round of the French Open. Serena had to overcome 25 unforced errors and four double-faults but she was able to take advantage of Sanchez’s poor service game. Andy Roddick has reached the fourth round at the French Open for the first time after the American breezed past France’s Marc Gicquel in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, keeping his quest for a second Grand Slam singles title alive. Roddick played nearly flawless tennis with just 11 unforced errors while taking advantage of Gicquel’s tough time serving. Gicquel managed to put just 49 percent of his first serves in play, winning on 63 percent of those. In comparison Roddick placed 68 percent of his first serves in play and won 84 percent of those offerings. Roddick managed to break Gicquel’s serve on four of seven opportunities while never having his serve broke. Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached two Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. South Ossetia Holding Elections, Independence Still in Question

South Ossetia is holding their first elections since declaring independence from Georgia last August following a five-day war that involved Russian troops. Georgia has not recognized South Ossetia’s independence and sill claims the breakaway region as its own yet polls opened on Sunday. The elections are seen as an opportunity for Eduard Kokoity and his Unity party to strengthen their grip on the disputed region and with Russia’s support the outcome is likely to be favorable. There are 34 parliamentary seats at stake in the election with just one Georgian listed a parliamentary candidate. Opposition to Kokoity have accused the leader of embezzling Russian aid money to the war torn region that still bears the scars of the recent war. Kokoity has denied those charges. Hamas Fighters Clash with Palestinian Police in West Bank, 6 Killed

A clash between Hamas fighters and Palestinian police in the West Bank has left six people dead and raised the tension between the rival Hamas and Fatah groups. The fighting broke as Palestinian police, loyal to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas of the Fatah faction, went to arrest Mohammed al-Samman, commander of the Hamas fighters in the northern West Bank. Samman, along with another Hamas militant, refused to surrender and a gun battle erupted. Three police officers were killed in the battle as were the two Hamas fighters and the owner of the home in which the militants were staying. Fatah and Hamas factions have been at odds for some time now with Fatah in charge of the West Bank and Hamas the Gaza Strip. It was Hamas that ousted Fatah and the Palestinian Authority from control in the Gaza Strip in 2007 and since that time the two have been involved in sporadic fighting. Former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri Dies at 79

Former Sudanese President Jaafar Nimeiri has died at the age of 79 after developing “an illness” and becoming too sick to be taken out of the country for treatment. Nimeiri rose to power in 1969 following a coup that kept him in office up until he was ousted in a coup himself in 1985. Following his removal from office Nimeiri spent 14 years in exile in Cairo before returning to Sudan in 1999. There have been no details released on the illness that led to Nimeiri’s death. Former Iraqi Trade Minister Arrested at Baghdad Airport

Former Iraqi trade minister Abdul Falah Sundani was arrested at the Baghdad airport on Saturday after the plane he was on was ordered to turn back so that he could be detained. Sundani was arrested on corruption charges, claims that led him to resign as trade minister earlier this month. While he has denied any wrong-doing he agreed to step down and Prime Minister Nouri Maliki accepted the resignation. The arrest of Sundani was ordered by the Commission on Public Integrity after an investigation into his department revealed large sums of money had been missing. Sundani had been on a flight to the United Arab Emirates when officials ordered the pilots to turn back to prevent him from fleeing the charges. Pakistan Military Claims Control of Swat Valley Town

The Pakistani military has said it has regained control of the largest town in the Swat valley, Mingora, after driving out Taliban insurgents. Pakistan has launched a massive campaign against the Taliban in the Swat valley over the past month in an effort to purge the town of militants. The fighting has led to hundreds of deaths while millions have fled the area to escape the battles. With the latest offensive by the Pakistani military have come new attacks by the Taliban, most notably a bombing in Lahore that targeted police and security buildings. In that blast more than 20 people were killed and 300 injured. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in response to the military’s actions in the Swat valley. Reclaiming control of Mingora is seen as a major victory for the Pakistani military yet they have said there is still plenty of fighting left in the Swat valley and they continue to search homes for militants. Rumors of a romance between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are “bullsh*t” says their Twilight co-star Billy Burke. Burke, who plays Stewart’s father in the Twilight series, says he finds it unlikely the pair are dating. “As far as I know, I’m gonna say bullsh*t. I’m not buying it. Please!” Burke told E! news of the reports. Pattinson, 22, and Stewart, 19, were first linked after the release of Twilight last year. They have both denied the rumors.
