Brett Favre is expected to play the entire first half of the Minnesota Vikings Monday night game against the Houston Texans despite suffering from what he believes may be a cracked rib. Favre has said when he takes a deep breath it causes some discomfort but has made it clear he has every intention of playing. The three-time NFL MVP recently came out of retirement and played a limited number of snaps in the Vikings last game, completing just one pass for four yards. Kim Clijsters needed less than an hour to get through the first round at the 2009 U.S. Open, crushing Viktoriya Kutuzova in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round in New York. Clijsters dominated the match with a powerful serve that produced seven aces and 17 winners compared to Kutuzova who didn’t have a single ace and managed just seven winners. Nikolay Davydenko is taking another shot at securing is first Grand Slam singles title and on Monday the Russian got past Dieter Kindlmann in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to move into the second round of the 2009 U.S. Open in New York. Davydenko managed to control much of the match with his serve as he collected six aces and committed just one double fault while Kindlmann struggled with his serve, putting just 47 percent of his first offering in play and committing five double faults. Davydenko is still searching for his first Grand Slam singles title. He reached the fourth round at last year’s U.S. Open after two straight years in the semifinals. The Russian has also reached the semifinals of the French Open twice but has yet to advance to the finals at a Grand Slam event. Roger Federer began his quest for a sixth straight U.S. Open title on Monday and the Swiss star had little trouble getting past Devin Britton, beating the American in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 to move into the second round. Federer, coming off an epic Wimbledon run that ended with his record-setting 15th Grand Slam singles title, took advantage of some sloppy play committed by Britton as the American had 40 unforced errors and nine double faults. As usual, Federer controlled the match with his first serve, wining 82 percent of those put in play. Brazil to Institute Greater State Control of Oil Industry

Brazil has announced plans to shift its current handling of oil contracts, moving towards more state control in the oil industry after determining its offshore reserves could rival those of OPEC countries within a decade. Many believe the state’s involvement in the oil industry could be a means of handling the country’s poverty problems and eventually push the nation to developed status. Under the current system oil companies bid for rights to explore for oil in blocks but President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has proposed a new system that would give Brazil ownership of part of all the oil produced. A change to the current system would reduce the role of foreign firms and could limit their investments in the country. Brazil owns an oil field that is estimated to contain 50 billion barrels of oil but it is located about 311 miles off its south-eastern coast and could cost a considerable investment to develop. Former Finbank chief Okey Nwosu appeared in court on Monday to answer to criminal charges brought by Nigerian anti-corruption police, marking the beginning of a series of trials targeting executives of five banks that received bail-out money when their institutions faced collapse. Nwosu pled not-guilty to 11 charges relating to his bank’s accumulation of bad debt under his management and several more executives are expected to answer to charges over the coming days. The five banks, including Afribank, Intercontinental Bank, Finbank, Oceanic Bank and Union Bank, received $2.6 billion in bail-out funds after carrying low cash reserves due to bad loans. According to the country’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission many of those loans were unsecured or did not receive board approval. The EFCC also stated that many of the loans went to individuals or companies using fictitious names. All five bank bosses were removed from their position and now face criminal charges while

Sources say Jolie “exploded” when she heard Pitt smoked marijuana with Inglourious Bastards director Quentin Tarantino. Chris Brown has sat down with People magazine for his first interview since beating Rihanna in February. The rapper opens up about his shame and his feels for Rihanna. Brown was arrested February 8 after attacking Rihanna hours before they were set to perform at the Grammy awards. Rihanna, 20, was left battered and bruised from the assault while Brown says the incident left him “distraught.” “I was distraught… I went to my mom on the same night and told [her] what happened and broke down,” he says. After Kevin made his nominations, the house guests were treated to a luxury competition. Though the live feeds were cut during the competition, the house guests have been talking about it. Big Brother 11 Week 8 Recap: Kevin Wins HOH, His Nominations

Last night on Big Brother 11, Kevin, Natalie, Michele and Jordan battled for the HOH power in an endurance competition. Each were given a small cup to use to fill a large bowl with hot chocolate until they could retrieve a marshmallow from inside of the bowl. They had to walk across a slippery floor to get the hot chocolate and then take it back to their bowl. Kevin paced himself and kept his balance, giving him a good head start. Michele was close behind while Jordan and Natalie struggled to walk across the floor. Natalie gave up after she couldn’t find her cup and Jordan didn’t seem worried about losing. Days after Adam Goldstein was found dead in his Manhattan apartment, details are being released on his last hours alive and how he was found. A police source tells People magazine that Goldstein, known to fans as DJ AM, sent his last text message to two unnamed friend at 1 a.m. on Friday, the day he was later discovered dead. Goldstein, 36, texted the friends about his scheduled performance in Las Vegas later that night. Around 5 p.m. a friend called 911 because Goldstein was not answering his cell phone and failed to arrive for his flight to Las Vegas. NYPD officers broke down the door to Goldstein’s apartment and found his lifeless body in bed. A crack pipe was lying nearby. A bag of crack cocaine and prescription drugs were also found in the apartment. Goldstein recently wrapped up filming his MTV reality show Gone Too Far, in which he helps drug addicts get sober.
