Condoleezza Rice Travels to Libya to Meet with Muammar Gaddafi

Posted on 9/5/2008 @ 6:02 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

In what is being billed as an “historic” visit U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Tripoli to meet with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to further strengthen relations between the two countries that had once been bitter enemies. Those sentiments appeared to be buried last month when both sides took steps to remedy long-standing issues that affected their relationship. Gaddafi had agreed to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to victims of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing while the U.S. agreed to compensate victims of a bombing raid in Libya in 1986. Gaddafi has yet to transfer the agreed compensation to a humanitarian account yet U.S. officials remained hopeful that issue would be remedied soon. Rice is expected to press Gaddafi on the issue during their meeting. In 2003 Gaddafi accepted responsibility for the bombing of the plane and formally renounced terrorism and abandoned its arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. At that time the U.S. removed Libya from its list of

Posted on 9/5/2008 @ 6:02 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

It has been six years since the devastating civil war in Angola ended and now citizens are taking to the polls for the first parliamentary election in 16 years. Angola’s 27 year civil war left the country devastated but for the past six years the nation has been rebuilding itself as a stable democracy with oil-rich resources. The elections include 14 separate parties yet the focus will be on the two main parties, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos’ MPLA Party (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) and the main opposition Unita Party (Union for the Total Independence of Angola). As more than 8 million registered voters cast their ballot on Friday most expect the MPLA to hold their power in parliament, a position they have held for more than 30 years. Friday’s election is being closely watched as the country prepares for a planned presidential election nextyear. Haiti Devastated by String of Storms as More than 600,000 Left Displaced

Posted on 9/5/2008 @ 6:00 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

In less than three weeks the country of Haiti has been pounded by two tropical storms and a hurricane, leaving the impoverished nation in a state of catastrophe and displacing more than 600,000 citizens. Severe flooding has swamped large areas of Haiti as Tropical Storm Fay struck Hispaniola in August, Hurricane Gustav followed, dumping more rain on an already soaked land and Tropical Storm Hanna recently passed over forcing residents to abandon the little they had left from the first two storms and head for shelters. Much of Haiti’s hillsides have been stripped due to mining, making the country prone to severe flooding and mudslides whenever a tropical storm hits. Coupled with the destroyed homes and businesses is a devastated agricultural sector that has seen much of its farmland swallowed by the flooding. Now the country is in dire need of safe drinking water as much of the supply has been compromised by the rising waters carrying animal carcasses and disease. The UN has begun efforts to

U.S. Condemns Russian Actions in Georgia, Questions Reliability as International Partner

Posted on 9/4/2008 @ 6:09 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney visited Tbilisi, Georgia on Wednesday and took the opportunity to blast Russia for its recent military actions in the sovereign country as well as its continued presence within its borders. The United States has been a vocal critic of Russia’s response to Georgian troops entering the breakaway region of South Ossetia on Aug. 7. While Russia claimed their military response was justified Cheney called the action “an invasion of your (Georgia’s) sovereign territory and an illegitimate unilateral attempt to change your country's borders by force.” Russia maintained that it was Georgia’s actions against an independent region that sparked the conflict and their attack on Georgia was carried out to protect the citizens of South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia, a second breakaway region. While both Russia and Georgia agreed to a peace deal brokered by France the Russians have refused to completely remove troops back to their position prior to the conflict. Russian troops remain in

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko Threatens to Dissolve Parliament, Call Elections

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 9:29 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, frustrated with the collapse of his country’s failed coalition government, has threatened to dissolve parliament and call for elections if a new coalition is not formed within a month. Yushchenko has been at odds with Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her All-Ukrainian Union party with both blaming each other for the failure of the coalition government. Despite Yushchenko’s threats to dissolve parliament the current coalition remains a legal body which means the president does not have the authority to form a new body. The feud between Yuschenko and Tymoshenko reached a new high last month during the Russia and Georgia conflict. Tymoshenko has sided with Russia in the conflict while Yuschenko has supported Georgia. On Tuesday Tymoshenko’s party blocked a parliamentary resolution that would have condemned Moscow. South Korea Accuses North Korea of Reassembling Nuclear Plant

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 9:28 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

South Korea has accused North Korea of breaking an international agreement that called for an end to its nuclear program, claiming the country has actually begun reassembling a nuclear plant in Yongbyon. The international deal, crafted by North and South Korea, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia, stipulated that the nuclear plant would be dismantled in return for aid, more favorable status in the international community and the removal from a U.S. list of states that sponsor terrorism. Pyongyang has said the U.S. failed to remove North Korea from the list, essentially negating the deal. It is believed the Yongbyon plant is largely intact but the country would still need to manufactured fuel rods and rebuild a cooling tower. According to a UN weapons inspector it could take North Korea up to a year to have the plant running. Motorcade of Pakistani PM Yousuf Raza Gilani Attacked by Gunfire

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 9:27 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Gunmen positioned atop a hill opened fire on the motorcade of Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday in what is being called an assassination attempt. No one was injured in the attack as bullets hit the window of an armored vehicle but did not penetrate the glass. Pakistani officials have remained silent on whether Gilani was in the motorcade at the time of the attack. Some reports have indicated the motorcade was on the way to pick up the PM at the Islamabad airport while other reports have said the motorcade was returning from the airport when it fell under attack. Pakistan’s Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik confirmed Gilani’s safety stating, “I spoke to the prime minister, and by the grace of God, he is safe and sound.” No suspects have been apprehended in the attack but the Pakistani Taliban is already being called the likely organizers while al-Qaeda has also been labeled possible suspects. Gilani was elected prime minister in February and has faced mounting pressure

Two French Citizens Captured by Somali Pirates

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 9:26 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Two French citizenssailing off the coast of Somalia have had their boat seized and are being held captive by a group of pirates. Piracy off Somalia’s coast is among the highest in the world as the country lacks the structure to effectively take on the groups who often target shipping vessels, fishing boats, yachts and cargo ships. Once pirates commandeer the vessels they often demand a hefty ransom for their hostages release. Without a functioning central government for the past 17 years Somalia has been able to do little to combat the pirates but in June the UN Security Council voted to allow countries to place war ships in the waters to combat the pirates. Taro Aso Front-Runner to Replace Yasuo Fukuda as Japan’s Prime Minister

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 4:24 AM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Taro Aso became secretary general of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party one month ago but now it appears the 67-year-old could become the country’s newest leader following the surprise resignation announcement of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Monday. Fukuda held the position of prime minister for less than a year before resigning due to growing criticism over the country’s economy, a scandal involving lost pension records as well as an inability to work with the upper house which seemed determined to block his legislation. With Fukuda’s resignation came the announcement from the LDP that they would hold a vote for a new president on Sept. 22 and that president would assume the role of prime minister. Aso is now being billed as the front-runner for that position. While the LDP plans a vote in three weeks the opposition Democratic Party of Japan has called for parliament to be dissolved and a snap election held, giving the Japanese people the choice. A general election must be held by Sept.

Bangkok Remains Under State of Emergency Following Violent Protests

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 4:23 AM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

A state of emergency has been declared for Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok after violent clashes between anti-government supporters of the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the ruling People Power Party left one dead and more than 40 injured. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said he had no choice in issuing the state of emergency. Samak did not give a timeframe for the state of emergency, only saying it was for the good of the country. Under the state of emergency the military has authority to restore order while civil liberties can be suspended and the media can be banned from reporting news that could instigate further violence. It has been one week since supporters of the PAD stormed government buildings and took control of several offices, including those of the prime minister. They have since shut down airports and rail services and have promised to encourage a nationwide strike that would affect 43 state run businesses unless Samak resigned. The PAD has accused the Samak-led government

Hurricane Gustav Downgraded to Category 2 but Storm Surges Predicted to be “Extremely Dangerous”

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 4:23 AM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

As Hurricane Gustav makes landfall along the U.S. Gulf Coast its strength has been downgraded to a Category 2 yet it is still believed to be capable of Category 3 storm surges that could devastate low-lying areas like New Orleans. Hurricane Gustav made landfall around the Dulac, Galliano, Grand Isle areas in Louisiana and as it pushes further is expected to drop at least 20 inches of rain as well as produce storm surges of 10-14 feet above normal levels. Nearly 2 million residents in New Orleans were evacuated from the city over the past two days in preparation for what Mayor Ray Nagin called “the storm of the century.” While Hurricane Gustav may not produce the same level of destruction that Hurricane Katrina created three years ago Nagin wasn’t taking any chances when he told residents to leave the city. As a Category 2 hurricane Gustav is packing winds of 110mph, strong enough to cause serious damage across land. Hurricane Gustav has already killed more than 80 people in Haiti, the Dominican

U.S. Military Hands Over Anbar Province to Iraqi Government

Posted on 9/3/2008 @ 4:22 AM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

In what is being hailed as a major step towards the independence of the Iraqi government the U.S. military has handed over control of Anbar province, once the center of Sunni insurgency and al-Qaeda operatives. Sunni tribal leaders were joined by U.S. and Iraqi officials at the ceremony held in Ramadi. U.S. President George Bush hailed the Sunni leaders in Anbar province for breaking from al-Qaeda in 2006 and helping shape the future of the region. In a statement released by Bush the president recognized the significance of the hand over for not only the U.S. and Iraqi troops but also, “the brave tribes and other civilians from Anbar who worked alongside them.” Beginning in 2006 the U.S. military has worked closely with Sunni leaders to drive out al-Qaeda operatives from Anbar province. While the Sunni tribesmen showed a willingness to work with U.S. forces it remains to be seen how well they will operate with the Iraqi government. Nearly a quarter of U.S. military deaths in Iraq have occurred in

Posted on 9/1/2008 @ 2:38 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Less than one year into his role as Japan’s prime minister Yasuo Fukoda has announced he is resigning from his post. Fukuda has faced continued problems pushing policies through the upper house of parliament which is controlled by the opposition Democratic Party of Japan. Fukuda’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has faced growing criticism as the Japanese economy continues to take hits and the loss of pension records and an unpopular healthcare system has mired the government in gridlock. According to reports from Reuters, Fukuda explained his frustration with the current problems noting, “If we are to prioritize the people's livelihoods, there cannot be a political vacuum from political bargaining, or a lapse in policies.” Click here for more World News About YourFindit YourFindit Community is a business, music and social networking community. Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Talks End with No Deal in Place

Posted on 9/1/2008 @ 2:37 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

Talks between Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party have once again ended with no firm deal in place as both sides left talks in South Africa. The two sides held power-sharing talks over the past two days yet the question of how MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai would fit into the current government continued to be the sticking point. President Robert Mugabe has said Tsvangirai would be given the office of prime minister but would have no real power in that position. According to reports both sides have agreed that Mugabe should remain president and Tsvangirai should become the country’s prime minister but it is the function of their office that remains deadlocked. While the ZANU-PF wants Tsvangirai to serve more as an honorary member of the government it is the MDC who feels Mugabe’s presidency should be more ceremonial while the decisions of government fall to Tsvangirai. The power-sharing talks were sparked by Zimbabwe’s latest presidential election in

Ehud Olmert and Mahmoud Abbas Meet in Jerusalem to Continue Peace Talks

Posted on 9/1/2008 @ 2:36 PM in #News by Brendan123 0 comments

In an effort to solidify a lasting peace deal Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas continued talks in Jerusalem on Sunday. The two sides have been part of U.S.-backed peace talks since late last year but have yet to come to a fundamental agreement surrounding issues regarding borders for a future Palestinian state, settlements in the West Bank and the status of Jerusalem. Talks could further be strained next month when Olmert resigns from his position as prime minister. Olmert had faced continued pressure to resign following a series of corruption charges related to money he received from a U.S.-Israeli businessman. Olmert is scheduled to resign on Sept. 17, the day his Kadima party elects a new leader. Next month both sides are scheduled to meet in Washington where they were to present a framework agreement to President George Bush.
