U.S. President Barack Obama has warned that the situation in Haiti remains “dire” and the country is still in desperate need of humanitarian aid as well as assistance in rebuilding a devastated Port-au-Prince.It has been almost two months since a 7.0-magnitude earthquake destroyed most of the capital, collapsing buildings and homes while leaving more than 220,000 dead. With much of the city still in ruins the homeless population remains at nearly half a million people and they are the ones Obama said needed the most help.Haiti will soon have to endure the rain season and with the homeless population so high a second tragedy could be just around the corner. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has responded to the controversy surrounding reports published the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) by requesting the world’s science academies review those reports concerning climate science.Those reviews will be coordinated by the Inter-Academy Council which will bring together a panel of experts to examine the findings. While the IPCC has said they stand firmly behind their 3,000 page report there have been a number of errors discovered, leaving many to question the accuracy of the document published in 2007.Ban Ki-moon said he wanted “to ensure full transparency, accuracy and objectivity” by having the report reviewed but made it clear “the threat posed by climate change is real.” He also said he had seen no credible evidence that challenged the main conclusion of the IPCC’s 2007 report.The Inter-Academy Council has already said they will not be looking for additional errors in the report but rather make suggestions about how the procedures of the IPCC can

China has agreed to lend Sri Lanka nearly $200 million to build a second international airport in what many are calling an attempt to gain greater influence in the island.The new airport will be constructed in the south of the island near a sea port currently under construction at Hambantota.In addition to providing funding for the airport Beijing will also put up about $100 million to improve Sri Lanka’s railway network. According to the Sri Lankan government China is supplying more than half of all construction and development loans it is receiving.With Sri Lanka moving toward a more stable political and economic environment there has been greater interest from neighboring countries who want to invest in the island. U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden has been outspoken concerning Israel’s recent announcement that they would move forward with the construction of some 1,600 Jewish homes in the West Bank, saying the decision could jeopardize the peace process with Palestinians.Biden said “the decision by the Israeli government to advance planning for new housing units in East Jerusalem undermines that very trust - the trust that we need right now in order to begin as well as produce profitable negotiations.” While Israel had pledged to freeze settlement construction in the West Bank they have said on a number of occasions that East Jerusalem was not part of that agreement.That contention has angered Palestinians who have already said a future Palestinian state would recognize East Jerusalem as its capital. Israel and Syria have both announced a desire to move their country toward nuclear power as an alternative energy source for electricity.The two countries were participating at a conference in Paris organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development when they made their intentions known.Addressing Israel’s desire Infrastructure Minister Uzi Mandau told delegates at the conference, “In a region like the Middle East, we can only depend on ourselves. Building a nuclear reactor to produce electricity will allow Israel to develop energy independence.”Israel relies on the importation of coal for much of its energy generation and has been looking to find an alternative source. Hawaii was hit by a 4.4 magnitude earthquake Monday evening around 6:30. Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has said progress was being made in the efforts to free a British couple that has been held by pirates for four months.The couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, were sailing in the Indian Ocean last October when their boat was commandeered by Somali pirates. A ransom demand for the couple was made but the British government has said they will not negotiate with pirates.Media reports had indicated that the fate of the Chandlers was slipping as they had been separated from each other since January and their morale was low. The remains of former Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos have reportedly been found by police, three months after his body was removed from his grave by unknown assailants.Police received a tip that the remains of Papadopoulos were dumped at a Nicosia cemetery and those remains are now undergoing DNA testing to determine if they were the remains of the former president.Papadopoulos passed away in December 2008 having served as Cyprus’ president from 2003 thru February 2008. An early morning earthquake in Turkey on Monday left more than 50 people dead and about 70 others injured. The 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Elazig province at 4:32 a.m.The temblor was located near the meeting point of two major fault lines – the Northern Anatolian Fault and the East Anatolian Fault – according to geologists. Dozens of aftershocks were felt in the region in the hours after the quake.The village of Okcular was the worst hit.. A strong 6-0-magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey, leveling buildings and homes and killing at least 57 people while leaving several more trapped under debris.Rescue crews are still searching through rubble to find survivors in the Elazig province but several of the buildings in the surrounding villages were completely destroyed. One of those villages was Okcular where at least 17 people were confirmed dead and as many as 30 homes lay in ruins.Officials have said a number of the injuries suffered from the quake came as panicked people jumped from windows or balconies.The 6.0 quake has been followed by more than 40 aftershocks, leaving residents fearful of returning to their homes. Voters in Switzerland overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that would have provided state-funded lawyers for animals in court cases.While animal rights groups had argued that there had been several cases of cruelty going unpunished nearly 70 percent of the voters turned back the proposal. Iraq’s parliamentary elections have been marred by multiple attacks across the country, leaving at least 35 people dead and scores more injured.Despite a heavy security presence throughout the country two buildings were destroyed by mortars in the capital of Baghdad while a number of attacks in other cities were reported.Even with the violence voters wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to cast their ballots as long lines at polling stations were standard. A Pakistani airstrike on a building in the country’s northwest region of Mohmand has killed at least 16 militants, one of them believed to be a top commander for the Taliban.According to reports a number of helicopters fired on a building where several militants had been gathered and after the attack Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik announced Maulana Faqir Mohammed was likely killed in the strike.Faqir Mohammed was said to meeting with another top commander in the hideout when the strike occurred. Shortly after the strike Malik told reporters “I would be surprised if he's alive. At least eleven soldiers belonging to the Philippine army have been killed and seven more left injured after their reconnaissance platoon on the island of Mindoro was ambushed by rebels.According to reports as many as 60 guerrillas belonging to the New People’s Army opened fire on the patrol as they were positioned outside Mansalay township. With Greece struggling to bring stability to its financial sector and recover from a devastating economic collapse German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to provide support for the country yet stopped short of offering any financial assistance.Merkel pledged to “stand helpfully by Greece’s side” but is well aware of the attitude of most Germans who do not support the idea of using taxpayer money to bail out a country that intentionally hid its massive debt in order to secure favorable loans.Merkel is meeting with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou who is said to be hoping to secure a commitment of support if his country can’t raise money from the markets. An early morning bus crash near Phoenix, Arizona has left at least six people dead and several others seriously injured.According to initial reports the bus was traveling on Interstate 10 just south of Phoenix when it collided with a car and rolled over.
