In a game that was supposed to be retribution for the #24 South Carolina Gamecocks it turned out to be history repeating itself as the Vanderbilt Commodores upset their SEC foe 24-7 on Thursday night, the second straight year the Nashville university knocked of Steve Spurrier’s squad.
The highly touted South Carolina defense appeared legit in the first half as they held the Commodores to a field goal while offensively the Gamecocks got on the board with a Chris Smelley 19-yard TD toss to Kenny McKinley and a 41-yard field goal from Ryan Succop to lead 10-3 at the break.
Vanderbilt came out in the second half ready to play though and after recovering a South Carolina fumble on a punt quarterback Chris Nickson hit Brandon Barden on a 31-yard TD pass to tie the score at 10-10. It looked like South Carolina would answer with some points of their own but Succop’s 42-yard field goal was blocked and five plays later Nickson snuck into the endzone on a one-yard run and Vandy was up 17-10.

The Giants came out looking solid as they took their opening drive 84 yards and grabbed a 7-0 lead after Manning plunged into the endzone from one yard out. After the New York defense held the Redskins to a three and out the Giants offense drove down to the Washington 7-yard-line before settling for a 24-yard field goal from John Carney and a 10-0 advantage.
After the Redskins were forced to punt on their second consecutive possession the Giants once again moved down the field and settled for another Carney field goal.
Washington’s offensive woes continued on their third possession as the Giants forced another three and out and Manning moved New York down to the Washington

Roger Federer didn’t take the easy road but he still made his way to the 2008 U.S. Open after downing Gilles Muller in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on Thursday.
Federer didn’t rely on his dominant serve to get past Muller on Thursday as he finished with just 7 aces, instead the Swiss star forced Muller into extended play and it worked to his benefit. Federer finished with 19 unforced errors while Muller totaled 32 miscues.
Federer is seeking his first Grand Slam victory of 2008 after falling in the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon. The 27-year-old has won at least one Grand Slam singles title since 2003, totaling 12 career wins including four at the U.S. Open.

The Florida Gators, the nation's fifth-ranked team, willbattle in-state rivals, the Miami Hurricanes, on Saturday night at 8 pm on ESPN.
The Gators and Hurricanes have not met since the 2004 Peach Bowl, but the rivalry is still fervent despite the shift in each program. Miami has been rebuilding under Randy Shannon, while Urban Meyer has won a national championship and produced a Heisman Trophy winner over the last two years.
The Gators are led by Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and a bevy of offensive threats, including All-American Percy Harvin, whowill make his season debut against the 'Canes on Saturday. Harvin is arguably the most dangerous and versatile wide receiver talent in college football.
The trio of Brandon James, Chris Rainey and Will Demps each scored a touchdown for the Gators in their 56-10 rout of Hawaii.
Robert Marve will return to the field for UM after his one-game suspension. Freshman Jacory Harris was the starting quarterback in Miami's 52-7 win against Charleston Southern, but

The #24 South Carolina Gamecocks will almost certainly have revenge on their mind when the take on Vanderbilt in Nashville Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET. Last year the Commodores entered Colombia to face the #6 Gamecocks and left with a shocking 17-6 victory, beginning the tailspin for South Carolina that saw them drop their final five games of the season.
Steve Spurrier has already announced Chris Smelley will be taking the snaps for the Gamecocks Thursday night and if anybody wants revenge it would be Smelley who tossed two interceptions in last year’s fateful game.
South Carolina is coming off a 34-0 blasting of North Carolina State in week one. While the Gamecocks looked offensively challenged in the first half as Tommy Beecher tossed four interceptions they managed to put it together in the second and moved seemingly at will against the overmatched Wolfpack.
Vanderbilt is also coming off a win, having routed Miami, Ohio 34-13 in their 2008 season opener. Quarterback Chris Nickson is coming off

Rafael Nadal had no real answer for the powerful serve of Mardy Fish in the first set of their quarterfinals match on Wednesday night but the Spaniard regrouped and played his style of tennis to drop the American in a four set battle 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals at the 2008 U.S. Open.
Nadal once again relied upon his controlled style of play, placing 73 percent of his first serves in play and winning 74 percent of those offerings. In the end it was Fish who looked out of water as he committed 53 unforced errors compared to the 19 from Nadal.
Nadal has had an amazing 2008 having already won the French Open, Wimbledon and the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His victory on Wednesday night marked the first time he has ever advanced to the semifinals at the U.S. Open and a win in New York would be Grand Slam title number six.

With the New York Yankees up 6-3 in the top of the ninth-inning on Wednesday night Alex Rodriguez stepped to the plate and hammered a 2-2 offering from Tampa Bay Rays reliever Troy Percival high over the left field foul pole, rattling the catwalk positioned just behind the determiner.
Third base umpire Paul Runge quickly signaled homerun and for the 31st time this season Rodriguez took the trip around the bases and was greeted by Bobby Abreu who had been standing on second when A-Rod hit the bomb.
While the homerun was Rodriguez’s 31st of the season, gave the Yankees an 8-3 lead and broke his tie on the all-time home run list with Mike Schmidt with career HR No. 549, it was what happened after the ball landed that became major league history.
For the first time in Major League Baseball history umpires used instant replay to determine whether the blast was fair or foul. It was Rays catcher Dioner Navarro who instigated the replay request when he protested the call and manager Joe Maddon came out of

Johnson visited the Lions on Monday and agreed to a one-year contract. He officially signed Tuesday, and Bell was released to make room on the 53-man roster.
Johnson placed the bags in the locker room while he held a meeting with team president Matt Millen. When he returned, the bags were gone. Johnson initially believed the team's cleaning people moved them. By Tuesday afternoon, he still had no idea where the bags were.

The Super Bowl champion New York Giants begin the 2008 NFL season as they take on NFC East rival, the Washington Redskins on Thursday.
The game will take place Thursday night at 7 pm at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands on NBC. According to the schedule, the NFL has set several division rivalries during Week 1 to jumpstart the season.
The Giants will be led by Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning on offense, but their defense suffered several key losses. Osi Umenyiora, their All-Pro defensive end, suffered a season-ending injury during the preseason, and his cohort, Michael Strahan, one of the best defensive players in the NFL, retired.
Former Eagles defensive end Jerome McDougle signed a one-year deal to help the defense recuperate, but it will be tough. On the Redskins defense, they gained one of the NFL's best defensive ends in the offseason by trading for former Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor.
Taylor got injured in the 'Skins' in the preseason and his status to play in the season opener is a game time
