The Georgetown Hoyas upset the Syracuse Orange 91-84 in the quarterfinals of the Big East conference tournament on Thursday thanks in large part to their ability to get to the foul-line.While Syracuse was 11-20 from beyond the three-point line and shot 54% from the field they shied away from the paint and managed to get to the foul line just 12 times. In comparison the Hoyas shot 57 percent from the field and went to the line 28 times, hitting 19 of their free-throws.The Orange actually led 40-37 at the break and built a 59-51 advantage in the second half but the Hoyas used a 13-0 run to grab a 64-59 lead and never let Syracuse back in front. Chris Wright led the Hoyas with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists while Greg Monroe finished with 15 points, 10 boards and 7 assists in the win.Entering the game Syracuse was a favorite for a number one seed in the NCAA tournament but with their loss on Thursday they could see their position slip while Georgetown may have jumped a few spots come Sunday’s

The NBA has three games on the schedule for Thursday night and with the Atlanta Hawks traveling to face the Washington Wizards, the Chicago Bulls on the road against the Orlando Magic and the Portland Trail Blazers heading to Golden State to face the Warriors. The Hawks have dropped two straight and have seen their hopes of catching the Magic in the Southeast dim but they could still pass the Boston Celtics for the number three seed in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards have dropped four straight and look ready for the season to end.Perhaps the most interesting game of the night will be when the Orlando Magic shoot for their seventh straight win in a matchup with the Chicago Bulls. Orlando looks to be the number two seed in the Eastern Conference while the Bulls are currently sitting on the outside looking in. Chicago is just a game out of the playoffs and with a few wins in a row they could become the sixth seed.Offense will almost certainly be on display in Golden State when the Warriors host the Portland

The Big East college basketball tournament is now into its quarterfinals phase with four games on the slate for Thursday and there’s still plenty at stake for each team.Syracuse won the regular season title in the Big East and could likely lock up a number one seed for the NCAA tournament if they are able to knock off the Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday. The Orange aren’t the only ones playing for NCAA seeding as the Hoyas look to improve their standing come the Madness.Following the Syracuse-Georgetown showdown the Villanova Wildcats will get their Big East tournament started with a 2:00 p.m. ET matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Villanova could earn a number two seed in the NCAA tournament with a Big East conference tournament title while Marquette is a lock for the tournament but is probably staring at a mid-seed.Game three action begins at 7:00 p.m. ET as the Pittsburgh Panthers look for a bit of revenge against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Big East conference could put nine teams into the NCAA tournament but there is still work to be done for at least two of those teams. While many have Marquette and Notre Dame in the field of 65 both schools would like to eliminate any doubt with a win on Wednesday. Both Marquette and Notre Dame will take the court later in the day as Georgetown gets things started when they face South Florida at noon. The Hoyas are considered a lock for the NCAA tournament while the Bulls need a win to keep their hopes alive. If South Florida can make a deep run in the Big East tournament they could snag an at-large bid.Marquette and St. John’s will follow at 2:00 p.m. ET and while the Golden Eagles have put together an impressive resume they would love to get at least one win in the Big East tournament. That might not be as easy as they like as they take on a Red Storm team that punished UConn on Tuesday. At 7:00 p.m. ET Notre Dame will face Seton Hall with a shot at sealing an NCAA bid and a bit of revenge. That loss moved the Kansas Jayhawks back to #1, a spot they’ve held multiple times this year, while also pushing the Kentucky Wildcats up a spot to #2 in the rankings.Syracuse fell to #3 this week but are still a favorite to pick up a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, joining Kansas, Kentucky and the #4 Duke Blue Devils as top seeds in their regional bracket.Kansas is hitting on all cylinders right now after blowing out Kansas State and Missouri this past week. The Jayhawks are a clear favorite to win the Big 12 conference tournament and earn the overall number one seed come tournament time.Kentucky is also playing at an elevated level with convincing wins over Georgia and Florida. Smith published a column on Monday that said Iverson “will either drink himself into oblivion or gamble his life away.”Those gambling problems have led to his banishment from casinos in Detroit and Atlantic City. One of the most popular players in NBA history Iverson has had a difficult time finding the right team over the past several years.
