Rumor: Google Honeycomb With Music Service

Posted on 2/20/2011 5:29:16 PM in #Music | 1 comments comments

The rumor mill is doing its fair share of rounds, Google is about to roll out its own subscription service of the music app with Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb. Though Google has a web-based app store for Android, but now it just needs a music sale service to mirror it competitor Apple.

Motorla’s CEO Sanjay Jha accidentally revealed, Google’s plans for a music service, as he was advertising his company’s Xoom tablet. Here’s what he said:

“If you look at Google Mobile services [via Android] today, there’s a video service, there’s a music service — that is, there will be a music service.”

Although, this isn’t the first slip we know, at earlier occasions Google as revealed its intention regarding a Google music service with its Android OS. The overall indication is that Android is about to get its own version of iTunes.

Motorola’s bombastic Xoom tablet is amongst the Honeycomb tablet to receive the music app from Google.

Google Music will likely be cloud-based, thereby allowing users to stream or download tracks from wherever they are, provided they have access to the Internet. It’s the same system used by the online version of the Android Market. We assume that Google Music service will feature a  kind of digital locker, in which your purchase is stored in the cloud to access whenever.

According to New York Post, Google is having a tough time to appease the music companies as they are reluctant to jump in with Google on the “digital locker” idea. While Google is currently trying to get licensing issues cleared up, it could be a big hurdle going forward. It might stop the entire music service, but it could very well kill or delay the cloud-based component.

Still, the assumption is that we would get the music store later this month with the launch of Motorola Xoom. Google’s plan of rapidly diminishing the differences between iOS and Android seems to advancing rather well.  Provided the company can convince the music industry to go with its flow.
