The lighting of the unity candle in a wedding is a very meaningful ceremony. The unity candle symbolizes the union of two separate individuals. A unity candle arrangement consists of two taper candles, one large unity candle. They are usually placed on a pillar or a special table designated for these. Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano is reportedly considered President-Elect Barack Obama’s top choice for U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Napolitano gained tremendous respect from her fellow governors for her ability to handle sensitive immigration issues. Prior to becoming governor Napolitano served as Arizona’s Attorney General from 1999 to 2002. In 2002 she edged her Republican counterpart for the governorship and in 2006 she was elected to a second four-year term. On January 11, 2008 Napolitano endorsed Barack Obama for president and following his election win on Nov. 4 she was named to the advisory board of the Obama/Biden Transition Project. Obama has not officially offered Napolitano the position with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security but she is said to be his top choice. According to environmentalists in the United States the changes to the Endangered Species Act proposed by President George Bush could have devastating effects on animals and plants currently facing extinction. The activists say Bush’s plan to make it easier for drilling, mining and large construction projects by neglecting to conduct assessments from experts would result in the loss of several species. Those who support Bush have argued the assessments are time consuming and push up the cost of projects. They are in favor of allowing federal agencies to assess those projects. A former Sunday school and middle school teacher has been arrested on charges of distributing harmful material to a minor after she sent topless pictures of herself to a 14-year-old boy whom she met at church. Victoria Ann Chacon, 27, sent the boy topless photos on a cell phone she gave him. She also wrote him notes professing her love. The child’s parents called police in March after they found the letters. Months later, the topless photos were found on the cell phone. Chacon was arrested Tuesday. She resigned from her teaching job at Somerset Junior High School in Texas in March. The United Nations Security Council has announced they would send an additional 3,000 troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo as violence in the eastern portion of the country continues to escalate. While the UN voted to send the troops there has been no timeline as to when those troops would actually arrive. Fighting between rebel troops led by Gen Laurent Nkunda and government troops has left more than 250,000 people displaced and in desperate need of humanitarian aid. Nkunda has said his rebels are fighting to protect their minority Tutsi community from Rwandan FDLR Hutu rebels who fled Rwanda following the end of 1994’s genocide. Nkunda has accused the Congolese government of supporting the Hutu rebels. During a 100 hundred day period in 1994 more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus were slaughtered by Hutu militants. Amid growing acts of piracy of the Somali coast and around the world several nations bordering the Red Sea have agreed to meet to outline plans to combat the issue. The meeting, held in Cairo, includes officials from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen. It was a Saudi oil tanker, the Sirius Star, that was hijacked on Saturday. That tanker was carrying 2 million barrels of oil worth $100 million and a crew of 25-members. It is now docked off the coast of Somalia with the pirates said to be demanding $25 million for its release. Combating the attacks has become a priority for many nations sending goods through the region. Most of the pirate hijackings are resolved by paying a ransom but many leaders have said that act simply encourages further seizures. Several shipping companies have begun to weigh the option of different routes to transport their shipments but that could result in increased prices for the goods. Julianne Hough says that she is quitting Dancing with the Stars for the spring season but may be back for the fall season. The aspiring country singer reveals that she plans to go on a “big tour” next year to promote her self-titled debut album. “I won’t be coming back for the spring season for sure, but I might be coming back for the fall season. I’m actually excited about that.
