I don't know if I reveled in the riches of the West,
Whether I came from the genius of the East,
Or if I traded in the glory of the South,
But I know I come from Africa.
I feel it in my soul
Where my heart beats like round-the-fire drums,
Where my mind thinks like Ashante wisdom,
And my hands build tributes to Kemetian grandeur.
I don't know if I bathed in the Pontchartrain,
If I swam in the salty tears of the Gulf,
Of if I sank into the switching Mississippi,
But I know I was baptised by Katrina.
I feel it in my soul
From where I'm pulled to Jena, whether by Al or Jesse,
When Jazzfest trumpets blast like Gabriel,
And when New Babylon's jumbled tonges all ring the same to me.
Whether by fire or flood,
By my will or divinity,
Or by sight, be it brown, blue or green
I know I'm God's walkin', singin' child.
I can feel it in my soul
Where it burns when they curse me,
Where it hurts when they bind me, phisically or mentally,
Where I find the misdirected motivation to struggle.
