59 year old Mike Flynt Plays College Football

Posted on 8/26/2007 @ 2:21 PM in #Sports by sr0672 0 comments

Congratulations Mike Flynt of Alpine, Texas. Thirty-seven years after being kicked off his college team as a senior, Mike has returned to Sul Ross State and has made it onto the roster of this Division III team. He could see action as soon as September 1. According to Jaime Aron of the Associated Press, Flynt was thrown out of school for getting into too many fights back in 1971. Flynt has quite a history. He was on the first state championship team at Odessa Permian, the high school featured in “Friday Night Lights.” He was a strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M. For the past several years, he has been selling the Powerbase training system he invented to school systems and the military. Just when his wife of 35 years thought they would be settling into retirement, Mike decided, after reminiscing with college buddies, to try his hand back on the field and atone for his previous misbehavior. Not every baby boomer shouldtry to do something like this, however; Mike is in excellent Continued...

iPhone

While all the hype over the iPhone makes it sound as if it is the "second coming", what do you really get with it and is it what you need? Consumer Reports has listed several items to consider when deciding whether to purchase one of Apple's new iPhones: How important is phone performance? While the iPhone offers superb multimedia functionality via its unique touchsecreen and integration with services like YouTube and Google Maps, it's only so-so in the voice quality area. AT&T's service also has some issues. Is your phoneunder a current contract? If so, you would need to pay out the contract or its termination fee of up to $200. Are you shopping for an iPod? The iPhone's 4- or 8-GB iPod is the best MP3 player built into a phone that we'ver ever tested and offers a new and appealing interface. However, we'd be surprised if new iPods with those features didn't arrive later this year. Do you text alot on a keypad? The iPhone's text-entry interface is fine, and easy enough to learn, but very different from Continued...

BabyGets a Special Place in Omaha

if(requestedWidth if(requestedWidth > 0){ document.getElementById('articleViewerGroup').style.width = requestedWidth + "px"; document.getElementById('articleViewerGroup').style.margin = "0px 0px 10px 10px"; } From the Denver Post, 8/23/07. Baby is a Greater Sandhill Crane who waswas raised from a chick by a ranch hand who found him near Nucla in 2005. Thinking the bird was abandoned, the ranch hand treated it like a pet and the young bird imprinted on humans. Once Baby did so, he became unable to learn to survive on his own - even with other birds, state Department of Wildlife officials said. The DOW says if Baby ever hopes to thrive, the bird will have to learn to live around others of the same feather. When the ranch hand became ill with cancer late last winter, Baby was taken to an area near Nucla where sandhill cranes gather during their migration north for the summer. But when he was released, the bird wanted no part of the flocks. He was then taken to Continued...

Actor Kevin Coster has agreed to help save Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. Rosenblatt was built in 1948 has been home to the NCAA College World Series (baseball) since 1950. In order to compete with other cities in hosting the Series, Omaha has to come up with funding for either a new stadium or extensive renovation of Rosenblatt. A local group, Save Rosenblatt, has secured about 9,000 signatures from fans and Omaha residents who want to save the stadium and keep the Series. In the ads, Costner will expound on the pride and tradition of Rosenblatt and the spirit of baseball. Costner and the film crew are donating their time to the effort but there will still be thousands of dollars needed to produce and air the ads. Save Rosenblatt is funded by donations. Borax

Posted on 8/23/2007 @ 7:19 PM in #Quiz and Survey by sr0672 0 comments

Remember good old fashioned 20 Mule Team Borax that your mom or grandmother used? Well, it is still one of the cheapest cleaning agents in the supermarket. I just came across a new list of things that it can be used for in addition to boosting your laundry detergent's power. Some of these I saw in Mary Hunt's "Cheapskate" column in the local paper: For cleaning glass: 2 tablespoons borax in 3 cups of warm water, put in a spray bottle and pretend it's Windex...except for the spotless, streak-free glass. Can't get rid of that ugly mildew in the bathtub? Try 1/2 cup borax in 2 cups of hot water. Rub into the black spots, let soak for several hours or overnight, and then rinse. Then to keep the mildew from coming back, spay with a mixture of bleachand water everyday. Ilive in buggy country,so myfavoriteuse is sprinkling borax around the outside of the house... it keeps ants and spiders OUT! If anyone in your family has allergies, use borax in the laundry, especially linens, to help prevent morning Continued...

Git-R-Done

Larry the Cable Guy was roasted in Omaha, Nebraska, last week by the Omaha Press Club, and became the latest “face on the barroom floor”. Larry joined other Nebraska notables such as Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne. While other celebrities were born in or grew up in Nebraska, Dan Whitney, is probably the most recognizable at this time. Once he became the voice of “Mater” in the movie CARS, even two year olds and baby boomers know who he is. Since he purchased a skybox at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln so he can watch his beloved Cornhuskers, his fans have had a hard time deciding whether to look for Mater or Coach Callahan for autographs. And, by the way, the accent is pure Alabama, not Nebraska…Nebraskans don’t have accents! Continued...

Roller Derby Alive and Well

Posted on 8/14/2007 @ 5:57 PM in #Sports by sr0672 0 comments

Roller Derby is alive and well in these United States. I attended an exhibition bout in Phoenix a week ago between the Lady Lux Roller Girls and the Team Excalibur Hockey Girls sponsored by the Arizona Derby Dames. What a kick! Two teams with ladies from 18 to 45, dressed in outfits as skimpy as they could get by with and still be legal, racing each other around the Ring of Fire. Each team has a Pivot, a Jammer and 3 blockers. The Pivot leads the pack and when the whistle blows, the Jammers try to get through the pack without being annihilated, or breaking any bones. Once the first Jammer has cleared the pack, the scoring starts; one point for each person on the opposing team passed by the Jammer. There are several referees…in this bout, Ben Dover, Tigger and Oliver Klozhov who pace the Jammers and keep score. I was surprised at the diversity of people in the audience, as well as the skaters themselves…lawyers, students, pierced, covered in tattoos, little kids, big kids…everyone was having fun. The girls Continued...
